After firing, I open the kiln and am surprised because despite my many years of experience as a ceramicist and intensive work with clay I can never be sure how the glaze will look and whether the pieces will withstand the fire. Something happens that goes beyond my skill and experience, something I have no influence over, and because of it I am unable to control certain chemical processes that determine the final result. I must learn to accept this something. It is the only way I can recognize the beauty of especially those works that I wanted to be very different from the way they turn out, works which have quite naturally found a beauty of their own.
